Sugaring, sometimes called sugar wax or sugar paste, is an in-demand alternative to waxing. Sugar only has to be body temperature to be effective, eliminating the heat-related issues that come with waxing. The sugar paste used contains minimal ingredients- namely sugar and lemon- all of which are natural and body-safe.
It is one thing to be licensed to do hair removal in general, but it is another level completely to be educated and certified in a highly-sought after technique. I have been certified in both Foundational and Advanced sugaring techniques through Sweet & True Sugaring since 2020. I also earned my Elite Educator Certification through Sweet & True in 2023. While I sometimes use a strip to remove soft sugar, most of my work is done with a single-use ball of taffy-textured sugar. Women's Brazilian sugaring (full pubic hair removal) is my specialty.
Regular sugaring services can noticeably diminish hair growth for many clients. Sugar effectively pulls hair longer than a grain of rice out at the root, leaving longer lasting results and staggered hair regrowth. If services are continued every 3-4 weeks, the hairs' growth cycles will be synced so that results continue for longer.
Sugaring hair removal, while sometimes called sugar wax, sugaring wax, or sugar waxing, is actually a different technique than waxing hair removal. Waxing uses a product made of natural and/or synthetic rosins that need to be heated around 150°F, while sugaring uses a body temperature paste made of sugar, water, and citric acid (lemon). Sugaring is known by pros to have a learning curve that can make it harder to learn and pick up than waxing techniques. In my experience, Brazilian sugaring is more effective than Brazilian waxing in reducing hair growth and limiting irritation. Deciding between sugaring vs waxing is a personal preference.
Sugaring generally does not cause ingrown hairs. Everyone's skin is different, so one hair removal option might work wonders for one person but cause a breakout for another. In my professional opinion and from what I have experienced in my career, waxing is more likely to cause ingrown hairs than sugaring. Sometimes an underlying medical issue, lifestyle, or use of certain products or ingredients can be the cause of ingrown hairs regardless of hair removal method. Oftentimes sugaring can help reduce the appearance of ingrown hairs, and with regular services, the deep exfoliation sugaring provides can also improve the skin's texture and appearance.
While sugaring is not completely pain-free, my clients (and I) usually agree that it is much more comfortable than waxing or plucking. It is also way more comfortable than laser hair removal, which can quickly become costly. I work quickly enough to get the job done with precision while keeping any discomfort brief.
I do not recommend trying to sugar yourself at home. I have had lots of practice with this method, and I needed plenty of practice before I was confident performing it on clients. Many professionals comment on how sugaring has a learning curve. Some even find it too difficult to master, or some believe it is ineffective after only using poor technique. I am one of the very few licensed professionals offering sugaring hair removal in Syracuse and CNY. As far as I can tell, I am the only esthetician in Syracuse certified in advanced sugaring.
I will gladly sugar people of any gender. However, my "Manzillian" or male Brazilian clientele is currently at capacity. Please contact me directly for a referral to a sugarist who can offer this service.
Yes absolutely! You can have a Brazilian done at any point in your cycle, and you can use a tampon or menstrual cup for your service. Interestingly enough, hair removal can be more painful in the days leading up to your period due to a fluctuation in hormones. If you would rather wait until your period ends, we ask that you plan ahead as best you can and please provide at least 24 hours notice for any appointment changes.
